This project involves the adaptive reuse of a conservation shophouse, seamlessly blending its rich historical character with modern functional needs. The first-floor rear walls have been demolished to optimize space, creating an open and efficient layout that supports the evolving needs of a commercial office environment. To maintain the delicate balance between public and private realms, a modern interpretation of the traditional 木屏风 (mù píng fēng) divider is introduced, ensuring a clear demarcation between the commercial office space and the residential or private areas.
On the second floor, partition walls have been strategically added to reconfigure the space, transforming it into a dynamic office layout suitable for the needs of today’s businesses. The attic floor now houses management office suites, offering panoramic views of the spaces below, fostering connection and oversight.
The original shophouse staircase has been preserved, retaining the building’s iconic character while serving as a key vertical circulation element. Adjacent to this staircase, a full-height feature wall enhances the architectural experience, adding visual interest and creating a sense of connectivity across the building’s levels.
In this reimagined space, the historic architecture is respected, while the functionality required to support the adjacent hotel development is fully realized. This thoughtful design bridges the past and present, creating a modern commercial environment within a conserved heritage structure.
